recommendation: Headings are important for everyone to understand the content included in a webpage. Headings provide meaning for page regions and blocks of text. Someone using a screen reader will often navigate a webpage using a list of the headings. They will be able to understand the relationship between the headings and nearby content when the headings are structured logically and coded properly. Refer to this W3C technique article for more information about using headings: "Using h1-h6 to identify headings" - https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG22/Techniques/html/H42 Headings provide structure for a webpage. Webpages should have a single H1 heading, H2 headings should be used for page sections, and H3 headings should be used for subsections. Generally three levels of heading are recommended and anything more should be reserved for complex documents. In this instance some text on the page has been styled as headings and would be useful for someone using a screen reader to quickly find information and should be coded as H4 headings. Recommend analyzing the structure of the headings included in the site and recoding them so they provide a logical hierarchy for the content and ensuring that all text styled as headings has been coded as a heading. Suggest:
Digital Library of Georgia
//While it is acceptable for the logo image in the header to act as the H1 heading, it is a best practice for the H1 to be text that is part of the main content of the page.
Explore Georgia's History
//Notice that this is a new heading, H2 headings should act as section headings
Collections
//Notice that these headings have been changed to H3, this provides a more logical hierarchy
Counties

Free to Use

Institutions

New
//Notice the tab panel titles are now headings as they provide hierarchical headings for this page section
DeKalb County plat map books, years 1912 - 1936
//Notice this article title is now a H3 heading, it has not hierarchical relationship to the other article titles in the section
Suwanee First Methodist Church Historical Documents

Eva Thorton scrapbook

Our Partners & Sponsors

DLG and Me

Coming Full Circle: Building Scrapbooks for a Dedicated Library Trustee using Georgia Historic Newspapers

Online Exhibit Intern Inspired By Georgia LGBTQ+ Artists in the DLG

Flannery O’Connor’s Appearances in the Georgia Catholic Diocesan Paper The Bulletin

How the DLG Helps the Georgia Senate Press Office Conduct Its Research
